Big News Of The Week

Changes Are A’Blowin’ On The Wind

Since we last talked about such things, Blizzard posted patch 3.1.2 on the Public Test Realms for for players to beta-test… giving us a good idea of what is coming when Blizzard next updates WoW in a couple of weeks. This is the patch that promises to bring:

  • The Outfit Manager we’ve been talking about.
  • In 3.1.2, Vehicle health and damage output in Strand of the Ancients and Lake Wintergrasp will scale with the item level of the operator’s gear.
  • The Lake Wintergrasp daily quests will change to weekly quests. You should get more honor and stone keepers’ shards at turn in, but….
  • A lot of other stuff.

Rumors And Scuttlebutt

There’s Something Happening Here

What it is – aint’ exactly clear. There’s a man taking down apps over there, telling me web comics got to beware. We can’t help but notice the series of actions that have been presumably taken by Activision-Blizzard over the last few weeks as an assertion of their sole use of their intellectual property. When we last talked about this, it was Activision-Blizzard insisting that authors of WoW addons not ask for compensation for their work. Over the last week or so, there appears to have been a shift into a lot of new territory:

  • iPhone apps are disappearing. We first read about this at dblbbl.com ten days ago, where that blogger noticed that two apps had disappeared from the iTunes store: Warcraft Chest and WoW Realm Status, following the cease and desist received by Warcraft Characters a few weeks ago.
  • What happened with the German web comic? Scott is nervous. The comic is called Shakes And Fidget, and like so many web comics inspired by World Of Warcraft, it pokes fun at typical WoW-related experiences we all have. This past week, the creators of Shakes And Fidget took their entire comic down, and posted a message to their readers in German. We’ve had it translated into English, and it goes something like this:

Dear Community, dear fans, certainly some of you will have already noticed that we took down our comic strip. The reason is that the legal department of Activision/Blizzard expressed objection that Shakes & Fidget could aim itself too negatively at world of Warcraft and could injure their copyright. We do not agree with these objections, but rather hold Shakes & Fidget to be a legitimate parody on fantasy cliche. Nevertheless we have stated our objection and taken the comic strip offline, we plan to revise the strip and in the course of the time to publish again. We will continue to discuss this with Activision/Blizzard and hope that also the presently inaccessible comic can be placed online soon again.

They Give You Prizes….. For Playing A Game

We’re talking about the TCG and Minis games. It’s that time of year again — With a prize pool of over $360,000 worldwide, Realm Championships are the destination of choice for World of Warcraft Trading Card Game and Miniatures Game players on May 16 and 17. Prizes include Spectral Tiger Loot cards, $2,500 travel vouchers, electronics (such as iPod Touches and PlayStation 3s), and a host of other goodies. If you haven’t qualified for the Realm Championships, there are plenty of prizes available in the Realm Open, which is open to all comers. For more information and the location of a Realm Championship near you, visit the Organized Play info page.

I hear all kinds of talk about level 19 and 29 twinking but never any other levels. Are the other levels (39, 49, 59, 69, 79) not viable for twinking or are 19 and 29 just the most popular?

I have seen alot or arena videos on youtube and i was wondering if you know the name of the addon that tell when the other person is almost dead or when you or your partner uses a trinket and when you have low mana or health?
We decided to take a mulligan on this question and put it out there for the community. What do you think are the best mods for an arena player to utilize?

Drop Of The Week

And The Drop Of The Week Is…. Us.

Have we ever done that? Well let’s try something completely different. This week’s drop of the week is a blog post that we wrote and published just this week, and that we think you might find so useful – that we’re going to practically beg you to read it. The subject? Getting yourself tickets to Blizzcon 2009.

Get Ready To Buy Blizzcon Tickets, Hopefully

The Instance has been on vacation, and we decided to get our groove back with a quick and easy guide to ensuring that you have tickets to Blizzcon 2009, should you be able to go.

If you plan to attend Blizzcon this year, you’re going to need a ticket for each person that is going.  Your ticket is more than just a piece of paper; it’s a big laminated picture on a halyard that you can wear around your neck, as it provides you with access to everything Blizzcon has to offer, and entitles you to a bag ‘o gifts, assuming that Blizzard does what they’ve done in years past.  To quote Blizzard:

Tickets to this year’s BlizzCon gaming convention, being held on August 21 and 22 in Anaheim, California, will go on sale worldwide on Saturday, May 16 for $125 each, with a second block of tickets going on sale Saturday, May 30.

1. Don’t wait until Saturday to get your Battle.net affairs in order.  If you haven’t already, go here and create a Battle.net account.  Then, go here and make sure that the information in your payment options “wallet” is complete.

2. If you haven’t done so yet, merge your World Of Warcraft account with your Battle.net account.  It’s painless, forward-looking, and only requires that you enter in your WoW login ID, password and authenticator code (if your account is authenticated.)  You can also add your other Blizzard games to your profile.  That couldn’t hurt, and who knows what Blizzard may only stick in the goodie bags of convention goers who have the Diablo 2 Battle Chest merged?

3. Test out the system.  Get a feel for it.  Try going to the Blizzard store and putting something in your shopping cart, such as this Horde T-Shirt. Then click on the check out button to see what happens.  No, we’re not suggesting that you need to buy a t-shirt today in order to get a Blizzcon ticket on Saturday.  At this point, you can click on the little blue “X” on the right of your orange/gold shopping cart and kill the t-shirt.  But this is a nice way to make sure that everything is auto-filling and the store isn’t throwing any errors at you.

4. As of this posting, we do not know what time Blizzard is planning to put the tickets up for sale in the store on Saturday.  It could be 12:01AM PDT.  It could be mid-morning like last year.  They aren’t announcing an exact time, because they want to allow themselves flexibility.  Don’t sweat it.  Get up Saturday morning, have a look at the store, and if tickets aren’t on sale yet, check back every 15 or 30 minutes.

Remember, Blizzard is selling these tickets in two batches this year, and you’re going to get a second chance at them on Saturday, May 30.

Wowmatrix Finally Tells Their Side Of The Story (9 Comments)

We aren’t sure what to make of this.  It’s Wowmatrix’s somewhat belated response to actions taken weeks ago by Curse and Wowinterface.  The highlight quote:

When we launched WowMatrix (the cross-site updater application), we made a post at WowAce’s ‘Updater’ forum (note: WowAce which was subsequently acquired by Curse), and when we kindly suggested the possibility of hosting their AddOns on our servers to help with the bandwidth, the WowAce administrator promptly rejected the idea publicly.

This, coupled with the fact that at the time, WowAce provided an RSS feed containing direct download links to the AddOns, made it clear to us that they would very much prefer that our updater download directly from their servers, and not from our own (which is the exact opposite of what they would like now).

And another quote that is pretty much the opposite of what Curse has been saying:

We were the ones who approached both Curse and WoWInterface with beneficial proposals many months ago. We are probably still the only AddOn updater to have done this.

Our proposals included all 3 of the following:

a) Making regular financial contributions to cover bandwidth usage by our updater.

b) Technical implementations to reduce such bandwidth usage by third party updaters such as WowMatrix.

c) Additional exposure within our software to drive more traffic to their sites, thereby increasing their revenue and user base.

WoWInterface completely ignored the proposal, while Curse rejected the proposal on the spot, while making threats and trying to buy us out for cheap instead, so as to get rid of us completely.

Instead of taking the time to negotiate on our proposal, they were trying very hard to negotiate on the price of the buyout instead. It was an insult to ourselves and to our users.

It is clear that both Curse and WoWInterface are more concerned about their own profits than working with us to help better serve the gaming community.

This comes across like a pile of bricks, for two reasons: 1) It is completely and meaningfully opposite to what Curse stated here and 2) It has taken over three weeks for Wowmatrix to say anything at all.

The Blizzcon Ticket Queue System (1 Comment)

Blizzard put a lot of work into the page of information that assures you that if you’re diligent and a bit lucky, you’ll get a ticket to Blizzcon 2009.  We couldn’t help but wonder, however, is anyone reading it?  There is a lot of stuff here.  Things you should do before Blizzcon tickets go on sale:

  • Get your account ported over to Battle.net
  • Update any out-of-date information about yourself
  • Save your form of payment info, for fast payment during the sale
  • Sacrifice a live chicken

OK we made that last one up.  But it’s hard to forget that last years’ Blizzcon tickets sale was an epic disaster.  How do you think it’s going to go this year?

The Instance #144 – The Gold Business Is Booming! (4 Comments)

Big News Of The Week

One Million Chinese Gold Farmers Can’t Be Wrong

The Virtual Economy Research Network posted a groundbreaking report today, citing research into the business of gold farming and selling in China to show that at least 400,000 people are gainfully employed by the practice of gold farming and trading/selling, and that the number could be as high as 500,000 to one million. They estimated 60,000 unique brokers of gold in China – and we need to note that this includes brokers who are working on all MMOs, not just WoW – raking in an income in the billions of dollars. So that sounds a little shaky.

There’s A Party In My Convention Center, And Everybody’s Coming

Tickets to this year’s BlizzCon gaming convention, being held on August 21 and 22 in Anaheim, California, will go on sale worldwide on Saturday, May 16 for $125 each, with a second block of tickets going on sale Saturday, May 30. For those unable to attend, DIRECTV will once again be televising BlizzCon in high definition as a Pay Per View event, featuring coverage from the show floor, exclusive interviews, demos, and more. In addition, for the first time, players around the world will be able to watch the DIRECTV BlizzCon event as a Pay Per View Internet stream. Check out the press release for further details, and head over to the main Blizzcon website on May 16 or May 30 to buy your tickets.

That’s One Big Chicken!

As always, MMO Champion dug deeply into the PTR files for WoW for things that aren’t yet in the game, and believe that they have found the in-game rewards coming from Upper Deck in their next expansion, which is almost two months away! They appear to be:

* Magic Rooster Egg – Summons and dismisses a rideable Magic Rooster. No, seriously. This is a very fast mount.
* Ogre Pinata – Places a candy-filled Ogre Pinata.
* Path of Cenarius – Right Click to leave flowers in your wake.

This Kid Is Freaking Me Out

When Children’s Week came so quickly on the heels of the expanded Noblegarden, we were like everyone else: groping around for a resource that would give us some help completing the achievements associated with the event. Did you know that Wowhead has achievements lists in their database? They do, and we’ve got the link right to the Children’s Week achievements, which allows you to click on each and read the comments that help you complete them quickly, and even join in the discussion.
