3.3 Is Going To Be Bigger Than We Thought

Last week, we spent most of Rumors And Scuttlebutt talking about what players are telling us they’re dreaming about getting in World of Warcraft… someday, and since then we’ve gotten all sorts of interesting tidbits from the Public Test Realms, where Blizzard implemented build 10676 on Friday. We’ve had some looks into the future ourselves, and listeners have been sending us all sorts of notes and screenshots from within.

Crank It Up And Rip The Gnome Off!

This week on The Instance, we’re doing something we’ve never done before right here in Rumors And Scuttlebutt: We’re going to talk about the best WoW-related songs of all time. Or at least, of the last five years or so. World of Warcraft has inspired hundreds upon hundreds of musical deeds by every kind of amateur musician – parodies, style remakes, and pure original compositions. We love the WoW-related music scene.

In no particular order:

The prolific Ryan Myers, who has cranked out parodies like “Ninja Raiders” and “Clint Felwood”. Our favorite tune by him is “Action Bars“, a parody of “Handlebars” by Flobots.

One of the best pure singers making WoW parodies is known by the name Dax. He’s the guy who put out “Puggin’ Kara” last year – it was a re-working of Johnny Cash’s “Folsom Prison Blues” – and his best song is one of our favorites. It’s also based on a Johnny Cash song – this one is “Walk The Line”, only Dax’s version is called “Aggro Is Mine”.

Way back when The Instance was still counting its’ first 20 episodes, and raiders were running Molten Core and Blackwing Lair, a musician named Cranius burst only the WoW music scene with a heavy complaint song called “Big Blue Dress.” He’s the guy who last year, released his best song about WoW, called “Darrowshire”. It recalls the sad story of that lost town in what is now Eastern Plaguelands.

Ever since the folks from Stone Falcon Productions turned out “The Ballad Of The Noob”, everyone in the WoW music scene have just waited for their next musical works. They’ve got several songs available at their website, which we have linked in our show notes, such as “Enrique’s Dance Party” and “Feel The Burn”, but “The Ballad Of The Noob”, which is almost a parody of “A Boy Named Sue” by Johnny Cash – but not quite – is still their best.

There are dozens and dozens of parodies of Weird Al Yankovic songs that include WoW lyrics, and most of them are… unfortunate. But sometimes a couple of kids in their dorm room decide to take on a truly difficult one, and the gold standard is a duo who call themselves Pizza And Fries, who changed Weird Al’s “Your Horoscope For Today” into “That’s The World Of Warcraft That You Play“.

Summergale is an unusual musical artist in this rundown, given that she’s a she. You might recall a song by Summergale called “Hard Like Heroic”. Her best song so far came out just this year, and it’s a collaboration with the aforementioned Cranius, and it’s a parody of “The Way I Are” by Timbaland and Keri Hilson called… “Ulduar”.

And our final song tonight is our favorite, but we can’t play the whole song for you. That’s because it’s not open licensed. But you can buy it on iTunes, and you won’t be among the first to do so. We’re of course talking about the most commercially successful WoW-related song of all time, “Do You Want To Date My Avatar” by Felicia Day and Jed Whedon, with the cast of The Guild.

  1. you guys are amazing and I kind of like the rouge rouge big daddy maybe its a hermag to bioshock and man those guys are scary and rouges are scary (to noobs espically) so in a way it makes sence.

  9. All these WoW-inspired songs are so much better when you play them with people who have no idea what the songs really mean. They give you that look like ‘This is wierd, why you like this?’. Its great. My fav for some reason is Ulduar by Summergale. She has skillz that pay billz with those pipes.

  13. YOU GUYS ARE THE FREAKING BEST! I just started listening to your podcast recently, and I can say that I enjoy it greatly. I am a new player to World of Warcraft; I’ve only been playing for a couple months.
    My main is a level 64 (1.5 bars away from 65 as of now) Unholy Death Knight, named Odyeous, in the Hyjal realm. The first episode that I heard of The Instance was the one where you announced the contest for the Figure Prints, unfortunately, I heard that episode the night before the submissions were due, and therefore I did not feel that I would have enough time to put enough effort into the Figure Print. I hope I win the murloc pet! :)

  15. I’m kinda disappointed at the banners and tabards. They’re nice, but they don’t come close to the coolness I was expecting from Museum Replicas. Then again, they’re only 40$ so I guess it makes sense.
    Maybe I could buy one for the Grunty I will get?

  16. After 2 months of no WoW listening to 3 instance episodes in a row and attending the live show I couldn’t stand it anymore and I just had to resubscribe to WoW. So il be playing more on AIE!

  18. I’m still not totally thrilled with the look of the T10 Hunter gear myself. But then again it is doubtful that my casual butt will see anytime soon anyway. Plus, I suppose there is something to be said for the unicorn helm.

    Tier 10 rogue set doesn’t do much for me, but overall the T10 sets are pretty nice. Had a listen to the WoW -songs; quite the collection! An impressive homage to the game.

    Okay, 15 minutes ’til my next ‘Trick or Treat’ … still waiting for a few drops this season. Wish me luck!

  23. The Furminator has traveled back to your time to request a Grunty in-game pet. In my time, SkyNet has taken them all, and I need one to fight back for the future. If I don’t get one… well… I guess “I’ll be back”. Moo.

  24. I like the concept of T10 being based off Northrend mobs but unfortunately Rogues yet again get another horrid looking helm. Maybe it will grow on me like T8 eventually did but yeah for now not diging the “giant headlight” look at all lol. If any class should be excited it should be Deathknights and Warriors (who get to look like the Lichking and King Ymiron respectively, very cool). The lock and hunter gear is pretty nice also but I think the priest and mage gear really look blaw to me.

    Anyways I yakked enough already but I would like to just say that while this might be my first post but I’ve been a long time listener of The Instance. Always raved about you guys every chance I get to in gameg uildies and friends alike :) .

  28. by the way (i forgot to say this in my first comment) the frostmourne larp blade is one of the most legendary things i have ever seen i am in a larp and if i were to ever show up with that thing i would instantly become demi-god… then i would kill my father thrust the kingdom into darkness and unleash untold evils on the world.

  30. Museum Replica has actually a lot of really nice, full tang (actually usable), swords in their catalog.

    I have had the chance to hold quite a few of them and most are nice pieces. Makes me really curious to see what the tabards and banner will look like for real, not just on picture…

    Hope I get to see them in a store somewhere.

  41. None of the tier 10 armor appeals to me at all, the Hunter set looks like it was made for Beast Mastery spec hunters, rhinos, horns and all. Just missed the live broadcast the other day as you guys were finishing up :(

  47. I think it would be great if Herp, and Genry were in Cataclysm… as human hunter trainer/pet! It’s nice of Blizz to post T10 screenshots, as it’s the only way I’ll get to see them.
