Roleplaying for Goblins

In the last article, RoleCraft directed roleplayer’s attention to what I deem are the best informative websites regarding the history and lore for goblins and worgen. In this edition, we’ll take a closer look at the goblins, and ponder some ideas on possible roleplaying storylines.

Did you do your homework last week, roleplayers? Test time! Pencils ready? For the first part, quickly as you can, list five facts about the goblins. Go!

Done? Compare your list to mine:

1. Originally enslaved by jungle trolls on the Isle of Kazan.
2. Were transformed by kaja’mite, and developed a high level of intelligence.
3. Became masters of mercantilism.
4. Known as superb engineers and alchemists.
5. Refugees reunited with the Horde.

Those five facts can lead us roleplayers to create a myriad of different goblin personalities, while still keeping them grounded within the established WoW canon. Let’s break each fact down and see what roleplaying gems are uncovered.

Slaves
I bet it’s safe to say that goblins have no small amount of animosity towards the jungle trolls who once had them enslaved. After fighting for and winning their independence, what’s left open is how goblins now view trolls in general, and the Darkspear tribe of player-character trolls in particular. The range of RP possibilities is vast, and depends largely on what thoughts and feelings towards fellow Horde trolls you decide to roleplay with.

Kaja’mite
‘They say’ there is no more kaja’mite left in the world. This surely wouldn’t stop an enterprising goblin from searching for the very stuff that helped make them as they are. Perhaps your goblin is one who is now roaming the world, seeking out new information and following up on every rumor about kaja’mite, in hopes that you’ll be the one who finds it. Imagine what it could do in returning your race back to their glory days! Imagine how rich you could get!

Entrepreneurs
I once heard that “greed is good”. I’m thinking that the goblins must have heard that, also. Their business empire spans the World of Warcraft, and is a testament to their grasp of commercialism and free enterprise. Now that you’re no longer under the bootheel of a dominating trade prince, maybe it’s time you took the chance to start that pyramid scheme you’ve always dreamed of?

Bolts & Bubblies
Goblin engineering was once so well respected that it became one of only two fields of engineering in all of WoW. Perhaps your goblin sees what has become of the goblin state of engineering today, and wants to set about repairing or replacing all their works. Maybe you’re a goblin who is desperate not to return to slavery under the newly awoken Deathwing, and has a mission of crafting new weapons, armour, and potions for the rest of your race to fight with. Better than trusting in the laughable Gnomish technology to do the job, right?

Don’t Have to Live like a Refugee
Yes, you were put aboard a vessel by the Trade Prince of Kazan under false pretenses, after he took every penny and parcel you have. So what? He was only doing what he felt was right at the time. It’s not his fault that the vessel crashed on the Lost Isles, and you now have to start carving out an existence with absolutely nothing. There are other goblins with you who are in the same predicament. Who’s gonna lead them? Who will see that they have food, shelter, and equipment (all provided by you for a respectable profit, of course) to survive and flourish on this new land? This is the perfect time to begin your rise to being named the next Trade Prince!

These are but a small sampling of possible goblin RP storylines. Next week will be the worgen’s turn at receiving the RoleCraft RP treatment. For more discussion on this article through the week, follow RoleCraft on Twitter (@RoleCraft), or on the official RoleCraft Facebook group. Until next Monday, role on!
