#257 – The Instance: What’s in a name?

Scott and Dills saddle up for another episode, minus T today. He had holiday family stuff!

Losing your character name, what is a BattleTag, Blizzard at the VGA’s, account wide mounts coming, BattleNet Balance, and a great Christmas song! All that and more!

  1. how do you feel about the person that owns theinstance.com? people who sit on names and haven’t logged into them for two years just cause they may do something with it (in another two years)? Who cares, give it to someone who will play it.

  2. In the last few years, I’ve had names “freed up” twice now. I file a ticket, I ask for a name, I point out that I can’t find the name on the Armory (or where it is marked “inactive”). The GM agrees with me and tells me when it is safe for me to try to name-change. My partner has had the same thing done at least once.

Note: the name isn’t just given to me, it is simply made available. If someone else on the planet tried for the same name just before I did, then they would get it, not me. Must act fast!

Anyway, names _are_ important. I name all my characters in a certain theme, and when there is only one name that matches my character concept, class and theme, then there really isn’t an option. I must have exactly that name!

  3. Recently I had a 63 rogue I deleted 6 months ago restored. In the conversation with the GM that restored it they told me that my name had been taken since the deletion. I was more than fine with that and he told me that if I knew of any unavailable names I might be interested in that were linked with inactive accounts he could assist me with freeing up at that time. I chose not to go with this option and decided to use a name I had been holding for a long time (after I named changed my main 3 years ago).

  4. Well with name Bliz can hit a Wall if you think of it there is 10 million player (about)
thats 10 million names over so many severs and each player can have up to 50 toons in game so that upwards of 50 million names in the world of warcraft so at some point if a name is not being used I dont see why bliz cant give it to someone that wants it other wise at some point you run out of names just like the .com are running out of domain names

  5. Listening to the different TOR podcasts, we hear how people are maxing out all their available chracter slots to reserve 5-8 names each. I think it’s fair practise, if you’ve reserved a name for two years on a character, you don’t intend to play, why would you care anyway?

  6. Actually what is going on is simple. Blizzard charges $10 for a name change. If someone wants to change there name and it is taken by an “inactive” toon, they just take the name so they can make that $10. Really, it’s that simple.

  7. I once had to transfer a max level character to a new server, but I had to change his name since it was already being used by a character who is under level ten. He could have been reserving a name, but it was still annoying since I couldn’t even check him out in the armory at the time so I assumed the name was fine to use.

So I put up a ticket, but didn’t expect much. I got a slightly different name and used it for about a week. After that, the GM actually got back to me and offered to switch my name to the one I wanted since the character who currently had it has not logged in for ages. I declined the switch, since I grew on my new name, but I guess GMs will help you out under similar circumstances.

This happened around early 2011, by the way, so it looks like it’s been going on for a while, though it’s not a featured service or anything. I don’t blame them for doing it, I think it’s better to give the name to someone who will actually be using it.

  12. I actually have experience from the OTHER side of the name thing. I have a friend who has a GM in his family and he actually had the GM delete several inactive characters so that we could change the names of our main characters to names like Brandon and Dan, etc. (Sorry for anyone who lost a name)
