You guys are totally wrong about the Companion speccing system needing a total re-vamp in order to be more customizable.
I joined the SWTOR Beta in November of 2010 and I played every build from there until Launch. At one point in the system we had ‘kits’ we could buy for Companions that would give them different abilities by granting them different proficiencies for weapons, such as Grenades or Sniper Rifles. This would allow you to swap say a healer, for a DPS.
